News on Teen Time and Story Hour

Hello everyone! Just to let you know...  

During the month of August, the Youth Department here at NPL is going to be busy shifting and updating. As a result, we won't be holding Story Time or Teen Time from the week of August 9th through the week of September 6th.

In the fall our programming kicks into high gear for the new school year! Programs will include Story Time, monthly Lego Nights, craft programs, and an updated Teen Time schedule.

To keep up to date on programs here at the library, continue to check this page as well as our Facebook page.

As always, continue to stop in the library to check out our collection of books, movies, and CD's!

Teens came and got the chance to eat real sushi! For those who were uninterested in attempting the real sushi, we also made candy sushi! Everything was delicious! Check out some pictures from the event...

On Monday, July 19th we had a Cupcake Decorating event! 
There was a great turnout of kids, teens, and parents! 
We frosted our cupcakes, and decorated them with gummy sea creatures!

And the winners are...

We held our Second Annual Pizza Taste Off during "Teen Time" on Friday, July 16th in order to determine which pizza place has the best crust, best sauce, best cheese, and which pizza is best overall.

Each teen got a piece of pizza from Wegmans, Marks, Pizza Hut, Pontillo's, Dominos, and BB's and rated the quality of the cheese, sauce, and crust.
We had a great turnout of about 12 teens from the community.

We would like to congratuate the winners...

Pontillo's... for having the best sauce
Wegmans... for having the best cheese
Dominos... for having the best crust
and we offer special congratulations to Pizza Hut for having the best overall pizza in the taste off!!!

Thank you to all who came, and especially to Pizza Hut, Pontillo's, Wegmans, Dominos, Mark's, and BB's who made this program possible!

Look how much fun we had at our
Summer Reading Kick-Off Event!

For those who aren't aware, we held a tie dying event on Monday, June 28th that took place on the library's front lawn! There were 72 attendees!




Thank you to everyone who dropped by! Don't forget to come to the Tie-Dye Tie Up program on Wednesday, July 7th! Bring your shirt back and decorate it with our fabric paint and fabric markers!

We also want to thank our awesome Teen Helpers! We couldn't have done it without you!

Don't worry! You can still sign up for all of our summer programs and for the online reading program.

We're doing the online program a bit differently this year.
This year, every time you check out a book from the library you get a "ticket". Then, after you've read the book you can log on to the summer reading program from home (or from one of our computers) by clicking the computer on the right hand side of this page... he looks like this:


Once you're logged on, you can write a review of the book and once we receive it we will give you another "ticket". The other way you can earn tickets is by attending library events (like Teen Time!). 
You earn 2 tickets for each event you attend.
The more tickets you earn, the better chances you have of winning some of the super cool prizes we have for you!

The Newark Public Library Teens had an incredible time at this years Teen Book Festival.  Held at Nazareth College the festival welcomed teens to listen, talk, and receive autographs from some of the top teen authors of the year. *Currently he lives in New York City and works as a publicist in the book publishing industry

*The first book she wrote was A Hidden Magic. She sent it to 33 different companies to get published, only 1 of them accepted!

*She had to have braces on her teeth twice

*In high school when she had to give speeches for class she would practice her speeches by reading them to her stuffed animals

*He adopted a black bear 25 years ago and raised it as his pet. Her name is Buffy and she is 7ft tall and weights over 700 pounds! Once, when Ben was getting a speeding ticket, Buffy reached out the car window and took the pad of paper away from the officer and ate it! The officer ran away and forgot about the ticket!

Ken Wheaton



will be joining us for a very special Teen Time tomorrow
from 3:00pm-5:00pm!

Ken is an accomplished cartoonist, illustrator, and educator.

Some of his comic book projects include:

Mister Magoo
Kolchak: The Night Stalker

*Ken also runs a workshop with writer Eric Churchill; this workshop is for students and teens who are interested in entering the field. It is in it's 8th year.

*Recently, some of Ken's cartoons have been featured in television advertisements for Toyota and McDonalds on the West Coast.

*Barry has witnessed police interrogation through on-way mirrors (just like on TV!)

*He has three books that he is in the process of writing; one called Archvillian Book 1 will hopefully be released fall of this year; the second The Graphic Novel is planned to be released in Fall of 2011; the third The Monster has no set release date!

*She says she still writes terrible first drafts, and that she still has a lot to learn about writing, but she loves it!

*Tea is an important part of her writing process.
