Do you love the library and want to help out in some way? Do you need to volunteer?
The library has two events coming up that we need volunteers to help us.
~On October 18th, we need people to help with our Festival of Storytellers. We will need people to do all sort of things like sit at our registration desk or direct people to classrooms.
~The weekend of October 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th, we are having a book sale at the library. We will need people to help with the sale.
If you want to help out, call the library or stop by and see Dorothy or Elly.

While you wait for Breaking Dawn...
For all the Twilight series fans out there, Stephenie Meyer's fourth book Breaking Dawn was released on Saturday, August 2nd! Be sure to put a Library copy on hold for yourself; you can do that by using the OWWL.org catalog, coming into the Library or giving us a call! The waiting list for the new book is pretty long, so we have compiled a list of books and authors that have similar themes as the Twilight series. This way you have something to keep you occupied while you wait for your copy of Breaking Dawn!
Here are some books that the Newark Public Library owns...
Jade Green by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Looking for Alaska by John Green
Road of the Dead by Kevin Brook
Shadowland by Meg Cabot
A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb
Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt
Sunshine by Robin McKinley
Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
Here are some more books that other libraries in the system own...

Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper
Blue Bloods by Melissa De la Cruz
Bleach: Volume One by Tite Kubo
Vampire Knight: Volume One by Matsuri Hino

Teen Time
So you picked up the Summer Reading calendar and you saw that Thursday afternoons was a program called "Teen Time". Did you then wonder what "Teen Time" was? The answer may surprise you.
"Teen Time" is designed as a specific time for teens, going into grade 6 and up, to come to the library. During this hour time block, we will have a variety of activities for teens. Last night, we had an ice snack, a small craft and a game of Monopoly. Next week we are thinking of playing a card game. We might have another small craft.
The idea of "Teen Time" is to have a time where you can come hang out, see your friends, talk about what you are reading or listening to and what you might like to see the library purchase.
So stop by next Thursday from 4pm to 5 pm for "Teen Time"

summer reading prizes
Remember that you can keep track of your summer reading using our online program. This is the link. To collect your prizes, see the staff person in the Teen Spot.
Four every four (4) hours that you read this summer, you can get a "prize!" Did you know that you can save up your prizes for a bigger prize? So instead of taking fourteen (14) small prizes, you can add up your "prizes" and get a coupon for a small frosty from Wendy's. Likewise, instead of taking twenty six (26) small prizes you can add all your "prizes" into a new book.
We also have prizes from McDonald's, Arcadia Sports, Bee-Tee's and Walmart as well as small prizes like rings, pens, and more temporary tattoos than you can imagine. Keep up the reading and get to the Teen Spot soon!

"rain rain go away"/ "here comes the sun"
The paperback book sale on June 14th was quite watery. Because of this we didn't have a great turn out of customers. But never fear, we will meet sometime in August to play a Bake Sale for September. Our previous bake sale was very successful. Check back here and look for signs in the library about our meeting as well as the time and date of the Bake Sale.
For now, we can get excited about summer and the events we are having at the library. Remember Wednesday and Thursday afternoons are all for teens. Wednesday is Reader's Theater, for teens who are theatrical. Thursdays, starting July 17th, will be Teen Time. This is an informal time for you to come play board games, do crafts and eat snacks. Remember to keep track of your summer reading in our online program. You can find the link at our website. http://www.newark.pls-net.org/

Paperback Sale
So what has happened since this blog has been updated?
~We raised money to help support the Teen Spot at our bake sale.
~The Teen Book Festival was a great success.
~We planned another sale to help support your space in the library.
This sale is a Paperback Book Sale that will take place on June 14th, 2008 from 10 am to 4 pm. The sale will be outside on the front lawn of the library during Newark Family Festival or Newark-Fest. We need your help with this event. You can sign up for a one or two hour shift in between all your fun at the festival.
The money raised from this sale will start our fund raising efforts to be able to provide a bus to next year's Teen Book Festival as well as continue to have events and activities at the library.
If you want to be part of this effort, call or stop by the library and sign up.
