Teen Book Festival

Are you starting to get excited about the Teen Book Festival? This year it is being held on April 5, 2008 at Martha Brown Middle School in Fairport.

Want to know who is coming so you can start to read their books? If you come into the Teen Spot check out the display along the windows. You can also check out http://www.teenbookfestival.org/

This website has all the information one could possibly want to know about the festival. It has information about the time and the place, as well as a list of authors. It also has some TBF fun, including a game of hangman and an old-fashioned arcade classic "Whack-a-Mole", starring a TBF favorite.

Paperback Sale at Eastview Mall

Do you want to have fun at the mall and not hurt your bank account? The Newark Public Library is looking for volunteers for our paperback book sale held at Eastview Mall. The sale will take place at the mall in Victor on February 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd. You can sign up for a short shift any of these days. We are looking for volunteers of all sorts including retirees, moms and dads, young people and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. High school students, if you are looking for volunteer hours, gather two of your friends and an adult and give us a call. Remember you can do something good for the community without spending a dime. Stop by the library or call us at 315-331-4370 to sign up.

Finding us on MySpace

If you want to be the library's friend on MySpace but don't remember the link below and you can't find us by doing a people search, here are two quick ways to find us!

1. On the top blue banner of the MySpace homepage, make sure the drop down menu on the right side says "MySpace", then type in Newark Public Library. From there we should be approximately the third or fourth one down.

2. If you click on the search option between 'browse' and 'invite' and want to use the find a friend option, make sure you are searching using the 'display name' option.

~Make sure to include the word 'public' in both of these searches, or you might end up being friends with the Newark library in California. Which wouldn't be a bad thing, per say!

Food, Fun, Food, Friends, Food

Like food? Want to come to the library with friends and eat good snacks? Then the Newark Public Library is the place to be the first week of December!

On Wednesday December 5th from 3:30 to 5pm, we are having a cookie decorating program! On Friday December 7th from 3:30 to 5Pm, we are having an advisory meeting about things at the library, including helping to build the library's MySpace page. Pizza will be served at that meeting!

These programs are for teens in grade 6 and up. If you want to be a part of the fun, sign up at the Teen Spot Desk!

Have you been to the Teen Spot lately?

Have you been to the Newark Public Library Teen Spot recently? We have a new graphic novel section and display. It is slowly getting filled with new graphic novels, comics and manga. Is there something missing that you must read? Let Dorothy know or add it to the suggestion box located near the non-fiction or just tell the person sitting at the desk.

We also have lots of new books and CDs coming to the Teen Spot. To let you know some of the new things that we have purchased we have a new display located on the main study table. Look for all the new titles that you must "Get your hands on". As always if there is something new you want to see let us know.

Wondering if anything is happening for teens at the Newark Public Library? We are working on a couple of programs including an advisory meeting to help build a "myspace page" for the library. We are also planning a holiday get together to decorate cookies. Look for a post soon about dates and time for these programs.

Teen Spot Changes

It's almost August and the Teen Spot is undergoing some rearranging! We have condensed the magazines into one section and moved the New books to under the CD's, where the magazines used to be. They are much more noticeable and organized now! We have also shifted the paperbacks to fill up the space where the New books used to be.

Once we have fixed the shelves we will be moving the fiction so it is easier to find and follow. It will start by the check out desk and go along the wall. Also, we are going to be taking the graphic novels (which are in high demand!) out of the nonfiction and giving them their own home across the room. Many of you have already expressed excitement with this change!

The "Suggestion Box" and other pamphlets can be found in between the Nonfiction and the paperbacks, so please give us some suggestions as to what you would like to see in the Teen spot!

Come in check out the new display by the windows! It's all about sports! "Keep your mind and body in shape this summer with a great sports book!" And don't forget, we now have a computer with public access to the Internet! So come join in all the new fun in the Teen Spot! Hope to see you soon!

Summer Program!

Hello Teens! Are you interested in being a part of this summer's Reader's Theater? Dorothy is holding an informational meeting about it on June 28th at 2:00pm. Be sure to come and share all of your fantastic ideas. Also, Dorothy is looking for some teens who would like to come in and read to the kids as part of the children's summer reading program on Wednesday afternoons. If you are interested in doing this, come and see her at the library during the day to get more details.

On another note, for those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting Dorothy she recently graduated from the University at Buffalo with her masters in Library Science. She began working here at the Newark Public Library in May. Feel free to stop by and introduce yourself, her door is always open!

TBF LIVE! 2nd Annual Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival

Teens can sometimes be overlooked in libraries with much attention, money, and resources given to children and adults. To counter that, the Newark Public Library has joined forces with other Public and School Librarians across three counties to create a positive, cooperative opportunity dedicated to this age group.

TBF LIVE! The Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival is a day long celebration (Saturday, March 31st) featuring authors who write specifically for teens. The dynamic communication between the teens and the authors touches upon many important social issues such as diversity, gender identity, racism, and disabilities and build connections of understanding.

It is estimated that approximately 1,000 people will be attending the 2007 festival. Will you be one of them? If you are a Newark teen, interested in attending the festival but does not have transportation....never fear. The Newark Friends of the Library have generously donated money to provide transportation for area teens to attend the festival. If interested in getting a free ride to the festival, please contact Chris at the library 331-4370.

Where has the time gone?

It seemed like only yesterday that the Summer Reading Program was winding down. Now we're all bunkered down indoors to get out of the freezing cold, snowy weather. BBBRRRR!!!!!

If you have not been to the Teen Spot lately, you must do so. The Teen Spot has taken over the staff area so that it is now twice as big as before. New carpeting has been installed, more seating & tables are available, and most importantly, lots of great books, magazines, graphic novels/manga, & new audiobooks!

If you are interested in helping to update the Teen Spot, stop into the library on Wednesday, July 12th at 1:00 PM. This will be our planning meeting to select paint colors, decorations, etc.

On Friday, July 21st, come to the Teen Spot in clothes (that you can paint in) at 1:00 PM.
